SAFETY UPGRADE FOR RIDDELL ROAD IN SUNBURY

The Andrews Labor Government has completed works on a $2.3 million upgrade to improve the safety of one of Sunbury’s major arterial roads.

Member for Sunbury Josh Bull today inspected the Riddell Road upgrade which is one of Sunbury’s major arterial routes and runs from the heart of the city centre through to Riddells Creek.

The upgrade has included the installation of 3.8 kilometres of guard rails, 1.1 kilometres of wire rope safety barriers as well as improved line marking and drainage.

As part of the works, an additional 600 metres of the road shoulder has been sealed between Phillip Drive/Canterbury Avenue to the Jacksons Creek Bridge in Riddells Creek.

The project is aimed at addressing the recent crash trend involving vehicles running off Riddell Road.

In the past five years, there have been 18 recorded crashes on Riddell Road, between Phillip Drive/Canterbury Avenue and the Jacksons Creek Bridge, resulting one fatality and ten serious injuries.

Eight of these crashes were due to vehicles running off the road, which led to the fatality and five of the serious injuries.

The Safe System Road Infrastructure Program is funded by the Transport Accident Commission and aims to deliver projects that reduce the number of crashes on our roads.

“We’re getting on with fixing the roads that people rely on every day.”

Riddell Road is one of Sunbury’s busiest roads and by installing new guard rails, wire rope barriers and sealing the road shoulder, we’re reducing the risk and severity of run-off crashes and making the road safer.”
