NEW TRAFFIC LIGHTS FOR BUSY TULLAMARINE INTERSECTION

The Andrews Labor Government is boosting safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists at the Mickleham Road and Melrose Drive intersection in Tullamarine.

Member for Sunbury Josh Bull today announced the completion of a $3.1 million upgrade to install traffic lights and modifying the existing layout and approaches to the intersection.

Adding traffic lights will improve safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians by controlling all traffic travelling through the roundabout.

The upgrade also included widening the roads leading up to and around the roundabout, creating an additional lane north of Melrose Drive and improved street lighting, signage and line marking.

Pedestrian operated signals have been added to Melrose Drive just south of the intersection, to allow pedestrians to safely access nearby shops.

In the past five years, there have been six crashes at the intersection, three of which resulted in serious injuries.

This upgrade will address the crash trend of motorists failing to recognise and give way to other drivers at the intersection.

The Safe System Road Infrastructure Program is funded by the Transport Accident Commission and delivered by VicRoads.

It is an important part of the Victorian Government’s Towards Zero road safety vision – which is to have a 15 per cent reduction in serious injuries and less than 200 deaths on Victorian roads by 2020.
