GAP AND HORNE UPGRADE MOVES A STEP CLOSER

Work to improve traffic flow at one of Sunbury’s busiest intersections will begin within weeks, with a contract awarded for the Gap Road and Horne Street intersection upgrade.

Member for Sunbury Josh Bull today announced that Winslow Constructors will build the project.

The upgrade will replace the Gap Road and Horne Street roundabout with new traffic lights, dedicated turning lanes, pedestrian operated crossings and bicycle lanes to improve traffic flow and safety.

The intersection is one of Sunbury’s busiest, carrying more than 21,500 vehicles travelling on Horne Street and 18,000 vehicles on Gap Road every day.

Gap Road and Horne Street are major connecting routes through the Sunbury area with connections to Riddell Road, Sunbury Road and the Calder Freeway.

With a railway level crossing only 150 metres away, there are often long traffic queues at the intersection, particularly during the morning and afternoon peaks.

The upgrade will cut congestion and improve travel times at the busy intersection.

Extensive work to relocate utilities and services at this important intersection is expected to start in March and construction is expected to be completed by late 2018.
